Our Story

It started with a little Zen.

The Zen Concept — 禅の概念 — began during the COVID lockdowns, at a time when the world suddenly became smaller. Home became our workplace, our social space and, for many of us, our entire world.

We started with one simple creation: a Mini Zen Garden for the desk. A little sand. A tiny rake. A few stones. Nothing complicated — just a small ritual to help us pause, reset and create a moment of calm during an uncertain time.

That little garden became the seed of The Zen Concept.

Finding Zen in everyday life

We don't believe Zen needs to be distant or difficult to understand. It can exist quietly in everyday moments.

Preparing a bowl of matcha.

Running your fingers across something handmade.

Wrapping a gift with care.

Sitting on tatami with a warm cup of tea.

Taking five minutes away from the noise.

For us, Zen is not about doing nothing. It is about being present with what you are doing. This idea continues to guide everything we create.

From online to the real world

When Sydney began opening again, we wanted to bring those little moments of calm beyond the screen. So The Zen Concept began popping up around the city — East Village Zetland, St Ives Village, Northbridge Plaza, Rhodes Central and Westfield Wahroonga — small spaces that allowed us to meet our community face to face.

Our journey then took us into Japanese cultural celebrations across Sydney, including the Sake Festival, Chatswood Matsuri Festival and Japan Expo.

Every location introduced us to new people. And every encounter shaped what The Zen Concept would become next.

Celebrating Japanese craftsmanship

As the brand grew, so did our relationship with Japan. We began working with independent makers, craftspeople and suppliers, discovering objects that carried something beyond their function.

The texture of a handmade tea bowl.

The irregularity left by the maker's hands.

The thought behind a piece of wrapping cloth.

The beauty of an object designed to become better through everyday use.

Japanese aesthetics have taught us that beauty does not always come from perfection. Often it comes from care, patience, material and human touch.

The Zen Concept exists partly to create a bridge between these makers and Australia — sharing not only Japanese products, but the craftsmanship, philosophy and stories behind them.

The connections we treasure

Perhaps the Japanese concept that best describes our journey is 縁(えん / En) — difficult to translate into a single English word. It is the connection that brings people together: sometimes intentionally, sometimes unexpectedly, and sometimes at exactly the right moment.

Our story has been built through these encounters.

A customer becomes a friend.

An artist walks into our space and becomes a collaborator.

One maker introduces us to another.

A conversation over tea becomes a new idea.

A small pop-up leads somewhere we never planned to go.

We have learned not to control every part of the journey. Sometimes you simply create the space, welcome people in, and allow to happen.

From objects to experiences

Over time, The Zen Concept became more than a place to discover Japanese objects. People wanted to know the stories behind them — to touch, taste, learn and participate.

So we began creating experiences around Japanese tea, matcha, art, craft and culture. Workshops became another way to support artists and cultural practitioners, while giving our community an opportunity to slow down and create something with their own hands.

In 2026, we were honoured to be invited to SMASH! Sydney to share the culture and ritual of matcha as a Matcha Cultural Ambassador. What began as a desk-sized Zen garden had somehow found its way into one of Australia's largest celebrations of Japanese culture — and our journey with SMASH continues towards 2027.

JINOKI — 地の氣

The spirit of the earth.

As The Zen Concept evolved, tea became increasingly important to us. From this grew JINOKI — 地の氣, our tea spirit and a new expression within The Zen Concept.

JINOKI is inspired by the quiet energy of the earth — the soil, water, seasons and human hands that come together before tea ever reaches our cup.

Warm the bowl.

Notice the aroma.

Whisk the matcha.

Hold the cup.

Take a sip.

For a brief moment, there is nowhere else you need to be. Through JINOKI, we share Japanese tea and matcha not simply as beverages, but as small rituals of connection — to nature, to another person, and to ourselves.

The story continues

The Zen Concept started during an unusual moment in history with one very small idea: could something as simple as a Mini Zen Garden make someone's day feel a little calmer?

Years later, that question still guides us. Only now, our little garden has grown. It includes Japanese makers and craftspeople. Artists and cultural practitioners. Tea growers and tea lovers. Students, families and curious passers-by. People who have followed us from one pop-up to another — and people who simply walked through our door for the first time.

We don't know exactly where every will lead, and perhaps that is part of its beauty. For now, we will continue creating spaces where people can slow down, discover something made with care, share a cup of tea, and perhaps meet someone they were meant to meet.
