What you'll do
Introduction to Shodō — history, culture and writing systems
We begin with a short introduction to Shodō, the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy. You'll learn how it evolved from ancient Chinese scripts, how it became a Zen practice in Japan, and the three writing systems:
- Kanji — Chinese characters
- Hiragana — soft, flowing Japanese script
- Katakana — angular script used for foreign words
This grounding helps you appreciate Shodō not just as an art form, but as a cultural and meditative practice.
Practising strokes
Next we ground the mind through basic brush strokes — slow, steady lines that help you sync your breath with the movement of ink. This is where the noise fades and the calm begins.
Writing mindfulness kanji
Once the brush feels natural in your hand, we explore simple mindfulness kanji — words like calm, light, or gratitude. Each character becomes a small meditation, a reminder to pause and reconnect with yourself.
